That's pretty much how it went with me. I've been drawing and painting and creating since I was old enough to say "pencil!" Then I went to school and learned some more.
I saw a girl doing caricatures in a mall and thought, "I want to do that," so I set out to learn the style of cartooning and caricature. I practiced and practiced and did some gigs for free, and went and worked at Ocean City, Maryland for a summer and felt ready (she said, laughing). I've been doing it for over 25 years now and I love making people happy, going to parties and working, and generally having a good time while also having artwork in many basements across the country. It may be worth more when I'm gone!
I'm still learning and trying new ways of indicating facial expressions and hair (very difficult!) with minimal strokes, always the goal for quckdraw artists like caricature artists. Look at my facebook posts to see continuing work!
